Biography
With a voice often compared to Joni Mitchell or Judy Collins, Donna has carved her own niche in Chicago 's folk music scene as a songwriter & performer.
It was in her living room in Park Forest , IL where she developed a love for writing songs while harmonizing with her brother and sister as her brother played guitar. Influenced by the sounds of Simon & Garfunkel, James Taylor, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, and the storytelling of Harry Chapin, Donna combines these folk elements along with a pop sensibility to create story-like, ear-catching songs.
Starting out at the open stage at Earl's Pub on Lincoln Avenue in Chicago , she has moved on to sing on many stages. Some of the venues include the Uncommon Ground Coffeehouse, Two Way Street Coffeehouse, Charlie's Coffeehouse, The Fox Valley Folk Festival, Lucille's, Bill's Blues and The Bluebird Café in Nashville , TN. For a brief time, she played guitar and sang backup for The Art Thieves, a Chicago Rock group led by John Kimsey. Her songwriting style was a perfect fit for Green Light Performing Company, a children's educational theater and dance group who commissioned her to write for their live performances. One of her songs she wrote for Green Light, “Invisible Light” was performed by the company at the Adler Planetarium (no relation). The song describes the properties of light and supernovas. She also assembled the soundtrack for writer Paula Kamen's play “Seven Dates with Seven Writers,” using all local Chicago songwriters. Donna was the voice of a popular radio spot in 1997 for the Little Lotto, singing the song “Metal Detector.”
Collaborations include singing harmony for several years with Tom Dundee, performing live on stage with Buddy Mondlock & also with Beth Forrester of Uncle Jon's Band, Mark Dvorak, Chris Farrell and Robbie Fulks. Her voice appears on the soundtrack of the movie “The Vision,” a comedic horror film by Robert Alaniz, singing the song “Demon of Doubt” written by John Ludwig of the Chicago Songwriters Collective.
Donna has released 3 full length CDs, and has a cut on “Live at the Uncommon Ground, Volume I”. Her first CD was produced by former Art Thieves drummer Brad Newton, but since then she has produced her own records. Her Violets and Blues CD, recorded in Nashville at Creative Caffeine studios received wide radio airplay on folk stations and landed her in the top artist and top album categories in 2008. Some of the artists on the record include Michael Johnson on guitar, Dave Lawbaugh on drums, Andy Leftwich on fiddle and mandolin, Donna Frost on harmony vocals, Wayne Dahl on pedal steel, Jerry Kimbrough on guitar, Sam Levine on flute, Jack Jezzro on bass and John Catchings on cello.
She performs regularly and is working on a fourth studio album at Creative Caffeine to be released in 2011.
